Jazz Vespers

Jazz Vespers is a monthly gathering centred on improvisational music and reflection. We gather on the 4th or last Wednesday evening of each month at 6:30 p.m. See upcoming dates under What’s On.

Jazz is open, fluid, and improvisational. Musicians reach out to each other and find new art and music in the ways that they play together. You could say the same about spirituality and faith. And so this service centres on the music with spiritual reflection.

Each month, guest musicians and vocalists will join us to showcase their music. The service will also include a reading of sacred writings or poetry, a brief reflection, and a time of meditation or prayer. Our context is Christian, but the service is intended to be inspirational and reflective.

What is Vespers? The word comes from the Latin for “evening” and it’s simply an evening prayer service. We use the word because of the spiritual nature of the service and continuing the tradition of Jazz Vespers services started at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in New York City in the 1960s.

Doors open at 18:00 for pre-service drinks, snacks and fellowship; a pick-up choir, open to all, rehearses at 17:30.
